Dean Pond is a natural treasure in the center of Popponesset. It lies 250 feet from Nantucket Sound and Sandy Beach, and provides habitat for wildlife as well as kayaking and canoeing opportunities for residents. It is very shallow, approximately six feet at its deepest, averaging about 250-feet wide and has a shoreline of about one mile, most of which is lined with private residences. The pond is not appropriate for swimming due to the healthy population of snapping turtles and is not stocked, but Popponesset youngsters enjoy "catch and release" from the bridge just for fun. There is no parking and no bathing beach at Dean Pond.
Supporting the PondPopponesset Beach Association provides support for pond maintenance such as water quality improvements, hydro-raking and removal of invasive species. In 2021, we began an in-depth scientific survey to clarify our long-term needs for maintaining the health of the pond. To ensure we can preserve this valuable resource as a viable marine ecosystem we anticipate additional projects in the future.
Fundraising & Tax Deductible Giving
In 2021 the Pond Committee established Friends of Dean Pond as a 501c3 organization which allows donors to make tax-deductible contributions to supplement PBA funding of ongoing pond projects.
